Game Brainstorm
In
this assignment, I will be creating and presenting four possible game ideas that
I will eventually narrow down to one and then continue to work on throughout this
module of creating my own original game artifact.
While
completing this task of creating four original game concepts I was met with
some slight challenges that have partly clouded my judgment on how I will
eventually create my game.
While
I have plenty of ideas and story narratives within my creative reach, I am unaware of the scope of difficulty that
is required for each game . As I am only new to using Unity and game development
software I am still quite unaware as to how easy or difficult my ideas will
actually be to create and bring to life. Right now I have only typed them out although
I feel that I have created solid bases of game ideas that can be tweaked to
either increase or decrease the difficulty depending on the feedback that I receive.
Game
number 1 “Eruption”
This
game will be set in a foreign country, high in the snowy mountains. At the
beginning of the game, we see smoke and ash as the volcano then quickly erupts shooting
lava through the sky .We then pan into the player who is skiing on the
mountains below .
The
objective is this game is to survive the eruption by escaping the volcano .
The
only way for them to survive the eruption is to ski down the hill as fast as
they can before the lava catches up to them .
While
racing down the hill the player will be faced with various obstacles such as flying
rocks , puddles of lava , cloud, and ash fogging the screen and various other obstructions
that will attempt to stop them reaching the finish line.
The
player can speed up and slow down as they want but they must be cautious as there
is a countdown timer keeping track of their impending doom .
Once
the player successfully reaches the water below , they are rewarded a
checkpoint flag and then faced with the next level .
The
next level would consist of the player
trying to navigate their way through rough waves in shark infested water on a
tiny sailboat , in order to reach the ship that’s 200 meter of shore.
Once
at the ship the player has gained their second checkpoint flag and has continued
to level 3 .
I
may add more levels to the game depending on the feedback I receive and whether
or not I chose to eventually develop this idea.
This
game will be developed in a 3rd person point of view with the camera
angles behind then ,to imitate them being “chased”. I have taken inspiration for
the angle of my game from this skii app game Downhill Ski
The
player will be able to customise their game by choosing their accessories such
as skis/snowboard/ piece of plastic/bin lid.
This
will be a timed game where the player has control over how they want to
complete specific elements of the game at their own pace .
Game
number 2 “Rumble in the Jungle”
This
game will be a puzzle solving / chase game .
The
opening credits of this game will consist of a magic scroll that the player has
found in the jungle. The scroll is glowing and is inscribed with a riddle that the
player must read and remember . There will be words and clues that the player
will need in future tasks throughout the game .The player then may put the
scroll in their backpack and access it at any time .
The
objective of this game will be to solve the various riddles which will unlock parts
of the map and help them escape the jungle.
The
player will set of on their journey through the jungle while tackling with
various obstacle such as low hanging ivy , logs, sticks and animals trying to
attack. I partially like the style and layout of both of the games Subway Surfers and Temple Run
Image from the game temples run by Imangi Studios
source:Temple run
Both
of these game have a 3rd person pov with the player running through
a pathway completing challenges and dodging obstacles .
Eventually
the player will come to a crossroads where they will be faced with taking two or
three different paths . There will be a sign with a riddle here that the player
must read to decide which path to take .
The
player must then takeout the scroll from the start of the game , look at their surroundings
for clues and depending on the riddles they will then decide left or right .
One direction will lead them to the next part of the map where they can
continue their journey and the other will lead them to a horrible death and
send them back to the start.
The
game continues this way until they reach the final path which leads them to
tressure .
Each
level gets harder and the questions get more difficult .
A
huge inspiration for my game came from the film Jumanji I image the decoration and atmosphere as well
as the challenges and music to be as magical and mysterious as the game which you
can find here Jumanji the game

Game number 3 "The theory test"
Right
now, I am currently studying to complete my driver theory test and I thought
how convenient it would be to have an app or game that would allow people to
play out real life scenarios based on the questions from the theory test study
app .
This
game would be a driving game with various different levels of difficulty .It
would start with a simple road map layout with the player in a 1st person pov ,
as to simulate real driving .
As
the player follows their directions on their map from point a to point b they
would be faced with 4-5 checkpoints which would act as the questions that they
would need to answer in order to complete the level .
An
example of one scenario would be ,” the player reaches a stop light , there is
a red car trying to pass on his left and a bicycle passing straight ahead , what
should he do?” . the driver then will choose whatever option they decide and then
play out their decision on the screen . If they are right they continue driving
and if they are wrong they crash .
As
the levels continue on the game will become harder and harder until at the
final level they are given the most difficult questions . I took inspiration
for this game from the driving theory test which you can find here . https://theorytest.ie/learning-app/ver
The
player can chose to customise their vehicle from bus /tractor/car/motorbike depending
on what test they are studying for .
I
think this game would make it more exciting for people to complete their theory
test and less of a chore of studying .In a way this game would be a real life
simulation game.
Game number 4 "The greatest God"
My
final game idea is a game inspired by the popular game Mario Kart and the film franchise Percy Jackson.
This
game will be a racing game which is set in a world filled with Greek mythology
. The objective of the game is to become the “greatest god” . Currently Zeus
holds the title and therefore rules the heavens but throughout this game the
player can race their way to the top of
the gods.
Each
level of the game will be based on a Greek god and the element or story they represent
.
For
example, the final round will be based on Zeus .
Seeing
as Zeus is the god of the sky The game will begin in the sky , surrounded by
clouds as a racetrack with the player racing their customised vehicle through the
sky to get to the finish line .
As
always in any racing game there will be obstacles hindering the player from completing
the task .These include gaps in the clouds that allow the player to fall though
them to their death, Zeus will send lightening strikes to show his fury of
being challenged and numerous more.
Another
example of a level of the game will be
the player racing through rough , viscous oceans while trying to bypass sea
monsters and creatures .Seeing as this round is set in the ocean this would be the
player challenging the god of Neptune for his place.
There
will be numerous levels of this game set in various locations such as the
desert , the forest , a fiery hell and more. All of these locations will represent
the god that they player will challenge until finally the player faces Zeus in
the final .
The
player will collect tokens with each level they attempt having different ones.
For
the décor of this game, I am heavily inspire by the Percy Jackson film franchise
and hope to decorate my game in a similar style .
I
do not have any experience creating games nor designing them but this idea creating
had definitely been eye opening and allowed me to open up my mind to different types
of games and the situations which they originated from .
Through
this module I am excited to develop my game and create something that I am
proud of .
Rumble in the Jungle, what a good name you chose. I used to play this game a lot. I like the challenges and the objectives you mentioned when playing the game where the player should perform the tasks in order to win the game. I see that you have mentioned that there will be animals and objects that will attack the player while running through he jungle; however, I think you need to mention how the player will move in the game. For example, the player move left, right using the arrows, jump using the spacebar, and slide using the down arrow. To make the game even better and more fun, you could add coins that the player will try to collect them while running. I am curious to know about your game idea that you have chose but I think this one is really interesting and the unity tutorials we are doing for this week is similar to this game idea; therefore, it will help you in your game design.
ReplyDeleteHi Mollie,
ReplyDeleteLove the third idea so much.
I recently just passed my theory test but it took so much studying so I think a game to help people with learning all about the rules of the road is such a good idea.
Would you have a screen at the end with how long it took people to answer questions, so people are able to see what questions they were able to answer the fastest and which ones took them a bit more time to answer, just so the know what ones they found that bit more difficult so they can study those ones a bit more.
One suggestion I would make, would be to create a level that would have all of the questions the person got wrong and then the person is able to play a round just full of the questions that they got wrong so they can practise those ones a bit more than the ones they are getting right.
This is one of my favourite game suggestions I've seen so far.
Best of luck with creating your game!
Hi Mollie,
ReplyDeleteYour third game idea is great I think that will be really beneficial to help people to study for their theory. I have my test soon and studying for it was hell and so boring so a game would make it really fun and easy to learn. It sounds like this could be a really unique a great game.
