Introduction of a future director

Before we Begin

Before I introduce myself, I find it extremely necessary to point out to anybody reading this that the title of this blog entry may be slightly untrue or misleading as yes, this is an introduction but no, I have no idea what I would like to be when I finish college. So, to take the word “Director” as set in stone seems quite daunting and slightly dramatic, at least to me.

This Is the first time since starting college that I have actually had to pinpoint a specific career path that I can see myself committing to and I have been sitting here for the past 30 minutes typing different options and seeing which one looks best.

But to be honest I can think of quite a lot of different titles and careers and If I were to name all of them in the title I’m afraid I might run out of words before I have even started writing my introduction. So…please take my future occupation declaration with a bucket of salt as it absolutely undoubtedly will be completely different by tomorrow.

The basic facts

personal photo of myself

To start off simple my entire name is Mollie-Jasmine Christina Lily Fitzpatrick. I am 21 years old and I was raised / also currently live in Dublin. I’m a Gemini with a rising Virgo and Scorpio moon. I have the attention span of goldfish and I’m terrified of fish.

Hobbies I’d like to try

Now that covid is thankfully coming to an end I have a HUGE array of hobbies that I am going to pick up over the coming months. First and foremost, I am going to get my scuba diving open water qualification. Although I am deathly afraid of fish and anything else in the ocean such as crabs or God forbid seaweed, I still have this strange obsession with wanting to scuba dive so here we are….

I’ve also joined the surfing club in college even though I can’t surf. I’m also going to start travelling more by myself and doing more activities alone as part of this quest to try and “find myself”.

Before Covid, I loved taking part in random 6-week evening short courses I found around Dublin. In the past, I’ve done ones such as acting for beginners, acting for camera, confidence edge, and creative thinking and I can confidently say they were some of the most memorable times I’ve ever had in my entire life.

Some of my smaller hobbies I am currently partaking in is trying to run 5k without stopping (not a very enjoyable hobby), trying to bake, buying clothes so I can “find my style” and joining every single club and society in college so I can try them all out and see which ones I’m just brilliant at lol.

Another huge hobby that I’m so excited to start is film photography. I’m going to start using old film reels and my grandparents film camera to create art and document lots of memories from all my newfound hobbies.

Why I chose Creative digital media as my degree?

I have always known that eventually, I would end up doing something that involved creativity. I had always thought that being creative simply meant that you could draw or paint. It wasn’t until I was around 14 that I discovered editing software and the digital side of creating art.

Using premiere pro and the most basic tools within it I added an audio with some simple timestamped lowpass effects to a clip from my favourite tv show. I added some sound effects and played it back. I couldn’t get over how something so simple could change the feeling of the entire scene. I think from that moment I knew I wanted to make my own scenes with my own feelings. I find the entire process of creating so fascinating and captivating.

Although I love film, I couldn’t quite commit to one thing and the creative digital media degree allows me to learn skills and talents in so many different aspects of digital media which I’m so glad because I have found a passion for things I never would have even thought of such as graphic design and web development.

although I have no idea what I would like to work in I know 1 million per cent I’m in the right field.

What were your biggest accomplishments last semester?

The biggest goal that I am most proud of myself from the first year is coming back to teach myself all of semester 2 after I basically dropped out two weeks into it. Not only did I pass but I got grades that I am beyond proud of . The amount of work and dedication I spent over the entire summer has shown me a completely different side to myself that I never knew I had and will definitely bring forward with me to all of my future challenges.

What are my goals for this module and the future?

My goal for this module is to get an A, although of course, I will be happy with whatever result I get knowing that I put my best effort into it throughout the semester.

My goal for the future is to work for myself and have fun working every single day. It may sound unrealistic to some but I’m not going to work in a job on a schedule I’m going to work anywhere and everywhere in the world. Whether it’s working on a 6-month contract on a film set or travelling the world making documentaries or being a freelance photographer, I would like every year I work to be entirely different from the last. I have no specific career milestones or goals all I want is to have as much fun and create as many memories and experience as many different ways of life as I can all while I’m doing something I love.

Now we have come to the main event of this introduction.

This is Dolly Elvis Fitzpatrick. She is a 4-year cockapoo. We rescued her from a shelter in Kilkenny when she was 6 months old. Her owner had left her there because she didn’t look like all the other cockapoos ( she’s a bit scruffy looking) but I think she’s absolutely GORGEOUS and because she has hip dysplasia.

Because of her wonky hips, she has to get a hip massage every so often which I’m sure she has no objection against. But with all of her swimming, walkies, and special vitamin food the vet said she is healthy as a hog.

Her favourite hobbies include spa days which consist of some puppy pampering like getting her nails painted and eyebrows trimmed. She loves diving into the river every day so she can save her tennis ball from the fish and she owns an impressive collection of teddy bears that she keeps in a little basket next to the sofa.

  5. Hey Mollie!

Us Gemini's gotta stick together. It's obviously the elite sign. I don't feel like we had much interactions in first year but reading your page we have loads in common. Jak and Daxter was the moment back in the day. I loved that game! Hopefully this year is good to us!

  7. Hey Mollie, I have fallen in love with your dog. I had a rescue dog growing up and there is nothing better than seeing a dog coming out of their shell once they're in a loving home. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a happy dog.

  8. Hey, I have to agree with what you said about the whole choosing careers thing. I'm honestly in the same boat, There are so many different things I wanna do but I wouldn't have enough hours in the day to do them all. its really nice though with this course that we at least get a chance to try out all options to see what best fits

  9. Hey mollie! I loved your post! So informative and interesting! I think it’s great that you are more interested in the film and directing side of this course, there is definitely a lack of female directors out there, so we need some more! Also, I really liked hoe you said you wanted to take a solo trip, as an avid traveler myself I still haven’t had the opportunity to do that , but someday I will , hopefully soon that that restrictions are easing!
